NH Porta Rossa—Modern Comfort in Medieval Surroundings

What Do the Rooms Include?

Considered the oldest hotel in the country, the NH Collection Firenze Porta Rossa features updated rooms that still echo their long historical roots. Rooms are furnished in antique furniture and decor, and free wireless Internet access is found throughout the venue. Guests enjoy televisions, luxurious beds, crisp bedding, neutral color schemes with pops of red, and quaint work desks for writing or using a laptop. The Presidential Suite awaits in a tower and offers wrap-around views of the city through evenly-spaced windows.

What Amenities are Available?

This 12th-century hotel fits in naturally with the buildings surrounding it in Florence’s historic section. You're just minutes from the Duomo, museums, and shopping. Inside the hotel, the medieval look is retained in stained-glass windows, marble, and wood details, but the level of service and comfort is completely modern. The hotel serves breakfast (an indulgent meal including Prosecco and a special local flatbread), but doesn't have a restaurant for lunch or dinner, so take your meals in any of the many nearby eateries. Guests can enjoy a late-night drink at the hotel bar.

What are the Rates Like?

Room rates start at about $170 per night. A staircase leads up to the Presidential Suite in the old tower, where stays cost close to $700 per night. These rates are comparable to those at other luxury boutique hotels in Florence. Although recently renovated, some rooms still have old frescoes on the walls and ceilings; others have spectacular views over the city. Rooms are air-conditioned and there's Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.

What's the Bottom Line?

The old details preserved in this hotel make staying here a bit like stepping back in the past, but the renovations mean staying here is completely comfortable.

Expert Reviews
The Telegraph
Previously a characterfully haphazard family-owned hotel, the Porta Rossa is now comfortable, professional and modern.
A takeover by Spanish hotel group NH has brought the place up to international standards, forfeiting some of its individuality in the process.
DK Eyewitness
While the current building dates from 1500, documents confirm that a hotel stood here as early as 1386, making this one of Italy’s oldest hotels.
