Exceptional Five-Star Hamburg Hotel by Alster River

Grand and Elegant Kempinski Rooms on the Water

The Hotel Atlantic Kempinski Hamburg was built in 1909 and was renovated in 2011, giving it a whole new life and energy.  This renowned, palatial resort rises up on the edge of the Outer Alster River. In addition to the grand history and reputation, this hotel is close to the convention center and other important parts of the metropolis.

Visitors interested in local culture can take a short two-block stroll to the Hamburger Kunsthalle, an art museum featuring wonderous paintings from the 14th, 16th, and 17th centuries. For an exquisite vacation that endears guests to the way of life in Hamburg, this first-class hotel is hard to pass up.

Top-Quality Spa with Energy Clinic

Even the pickiest of self-care and spa addicts will be blown away by the luxury and details at the Hotel Atlantic Kempinski Hamburg's Energy Clinic, which combines old Chinese techniques with modern rejuvenation practices. Guests can also visit the fitness center or outdoor pool, sweat out impurities at the sauna, and much more.

For classic regional and maritime cuisine, book a reservation at the on-site Atlantic Restaurant. The Atlantic Alstersalon offers Hanseatic and European delicacies at a daily breakfast buffet of fresh fruits and juices, egg dishes, sweets, and pastries. There's also a traditional à la carte breakfast menu. Last but not least, escape the city environment and visit Hamburg's one and only Roman courtyard at Romantic Atlantic Atrium, serving light meals, coffee, and creative cocktails.

Sleep Well in Charming, Authentic Rooms

Each of the 245 comfortable rooms is uniquely decorated, with an interplay between handsome grand hotel architecture and modern amenities. When booking, ask whether the room features courtyard or side-street views. Wi-Fi and wired Internet access are both free inside the rooms. Wi-Fi is also free in public areas of the hotel, so it's easy to stay connected.

The Bottom Line

The unique spa, the blend of traditional and contemporary appeal, and the many restaurants are enough to make this hotel worth visiting, but being so close to the convention center and other city attractions makes it especially valuable to anyone focused on this section of Hamburg. The Hotel Alsterblick is another hotel on the same side of the water, but it is cheaper and further north of the city attractions. Still, if the five-star price is within your budget, give this Kempinski hotel a try.

Rough Guide
Long one of Hamburg’s premier addresses, this five-star was created for trans-Atlantic ocean-liner passengers – its foyer is a paean to Twenties glamour.
Michelin Guide
Now even more magnificent than before. It has an elegant, classic lobby, timeless, sumptuously decorated rooms... and stylish reception and conference facilities.
Fodor's
There are few hotels in Germany more sumptuous than this gracious Edwardian palace facing the Aussenalster, which draws both celebrities and the not-so-famous searching for a luxe retreat.
