From Kyoto Station, take bus 50 to Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shijo, check in and start your Japanese journey. Begin your expedition when you enter the sleek, stylish lobby, fitted with comfortable lounging couches and chairs. Before you venture out, try the beautiful breakfast buffet (surcharge). Whether there for business or pleasure, the Mitsui offers spa services, meeting rooms, free Wi-Fi in public areas, plus dry cleaning and laundry services. After a day of business or touring, soak in the huge hot tub or dip in the public pool; both will help you to unwind.

Priceless Guest Rooms

Rooms are similar at the Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Sanjo and Shijo. Each room features a deep soaking tub and extensive complimentary toiletries. Relax and enjoy the flat-screen digital TV or sit at the desk with your laptop and free Wi-Fi. When it’s time to turn in, slip on the nightclothes, slippers, and robe. Rest on the premium bedding and plan tomorrow's itinerary.

Dining Japanese Style

A trip to Kyoto, Japan, wouldn’t be complete unless you visited the nearby Japanese dining establishments to experience the authentic local foods of Kyoto. Try Yakitori at the Kashikura, an old Japanese house that serves food in small private tatami rooms, or dine with the chef as he cooks tableside. Next, go to Ippudo Nishikikoji, a Japanese noodle restaurant, or experience light and fluffy Tempura at Tenya, located near the Nishiki Food Market. Tenya is difficult to find, but worth it.

Interesting Customs

Everyone knows the custom and tradition of removing your shoes before you enter a private home and at times, a restaurant. But did you know the Kimono, worn in different ways for everyday and formal occasions, is the official dress of Japan? The less-embellished, simple kimono worn for everyday use is quite different from the silk, extravagant, and layered kimono used for special occasions. If you’re there on a business trip, it’s not customary to bring a spouse to a business dinner. Lastly, there is no fashionably late in Japan, so be courteous and on time.

The Bottom Line

The Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shijo is clean, comfortable, and close to attractions, restaurants, and shopping. The hotel guest rooms are decorated with simple fabrics and is clean and comfortable. The bedding is inviting, plus some beds are on a raised platform. The restaurant serves visually appealing food. This all adds up to a perfect place to stay.

Lonely Planet
A great choice for people who have graduated from guesthouses but don't want to bust the budget on luxury hotels... Frankly, we wish there were more hotels like the Mitsui on Shijō.

Located downtown, in central Kyoto, the same hotel group has another Garden Hotel by the station.
The mid-range Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shijo is compact and conservatively furnished in modern, streamlined decor. Clean and pleasantly decorated, the 169 rooms tend to be on the small...
