From Historic Monastery to Charming Hotel: Hotel San Francesco Al Monte

History, Meet Romance

The Hotel San Francesco al Monte offers 45 romantic rooms nestled on a hillside perched just above the center of historic Naples. Once part of a monastery, today the hotel boasts two on-site restaurants, a poolside bar, a rooftop terrace, and a free buffet breakfast so you have plenty of energy for a day spent exploring the city's sights. The hotel's on-site signature spa offers a range of wellness services to keep you in good shape and top spirits for your Naples adventure.

Central Location

Naples is chock-full of historic sites to visit, and its center has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Hotel San Francesco al Monte is in the heart of it all, making it easy to see the city on foot. Located between two funiculars leading to the city center and the coast, guests can avoid a lot of climbing between locations and save their leg muscles for exploring the sites themselves.

An Ample Dose of History

Leaving your hotel, head a few blocks southeast toward the Gulf of Naples and visit the imposing medieval Castel Nuovo, built in the 13th century, and its highly ornamented, white marble triumphal arch. Then travel to the Piazza del Plebiscito to explore the San Francesco di Paola cathedral and the Royal Palace of Naples. Before leaving the area, visit the ornately decorated 18th century Teatro di San Carlo. Head west from the hotel to the Carthusian Monastery, now a museum. Don't miss the carved Nativity, considered to be one of the world's finest.

Rooms With a View

With its hillside location, the hotel's views are just one of its many charms. Soundproofed rooms offer private bathrooms with jetted tubs, comfy slippers, and LCD TVs with satellite channels so you can relax and unwind at the end of the day. Turndown service, minibar, and climate control make the hotel an ideal place for couples or singles, and the hotel also offers cribs and infant beds for families with small children.

The Bottom Line

The friendly staff and historic charm of the Hotel San Francesco al Monte make it a good value for anyone traveling to Naples. With its tastefully ornate interior, it's also a popular spot for weddings and family gatherings. Plus, its proximity to popular sites like the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum makes it an ideal home base for wider exploration.

Time Out
This hotel was converted from the Santa Lucia al Monte convent, founded in 1557 by the Minori Conventuali monks.
DK Eyewitness
This atmospheric 16thcentury Franciscan monastery opened as a hotel in 2002. All of the now-luxurious former monks’ cells have views over the bay.
You cannot beat the atmosphere of this elegant hotel housed in an ex-Franciscan convent, nor the hillside location that overlooks the Riviera di Chiaia.
