Modern Accommodations in Oslo's Vulkan Area

A Trendy Location

As the name suggests, Scandic Vulkan is located in Oslo's Vulkan area, which is just steps away from the trendy Grunerlokka neighborhood. This creative, artistic part of Oslo has plenty to offer, including the nearby Mathallen Oslo, a European-style food hall featuring a vast array of Norwegian food and drinks. Karl Johans Gate, the main road in Oslo, is only about a 10-minute walk away from the hotel. Other close attractions include the Royal Palace, Oslo Opera House, and the Munch Museum. The town center is only a 15-minute stroll from the hotel. Despite the prime location and modern feel, rates are very reasonable.

Swanky Guest Rooms

Four room types are available in varying sizes, but all rooms feature classy hardwood floors, sleek white bathrooms, and modern, colorful art spanning the entire length of the wall behind the bed. Some of the included guest room amenities include free wireless Internet, desks, televisions with movie channels, and more. Many rooms feature sweeping views of Oslo. The hotel also features a special room called Blogger’s Inn that bloggers can apply to stay in for free. It comes with an iPad, wireless speakers, and a camera tripod and self-timer for photography.

Convenient Hotel Facilities

The hotel’s colorful restaurant, V Bar and Bistro, overlooks the Vulkan area and serves breakfast, lunch, and a three-course dinner (with the option of just one dish if three courses is too much). It’s a perfect chic yet warm place for guests to grab a meal or drink without having to even leave the building. Scandic Vulkan also boasts a fitness center for guests outfitted with cardio machines and free weights. Bicycle rentals are also available on-site if you prefer to explore Oslo by bike, as are walking sticks.

Great for Children, Too

Despite the hotel's modern aesthetic, it's surprisingly child-friendly. Kids receive a welcome gift and get access to jigsaw puzzles, books, drawing materials, computer games, and movie screenings. The in-room TVs have kid-friendly channels, and the hotel’s restaurants offers a kid’s menu along with high chairs. Cribs and infant beds are also available and free to borrow for your guest room.

The Bottom Line

If you prefer to stay out of the city center and in a more artsy, up-and-coming area, Scandic Vulkan offers this in addition to great rates, a cool factor, and more family-friendly amenities than most hotels.

New-build hotel on the site of a former silver mine, in an up-and-coming part of the city.
This nine-story, stark white angular building rises like an iceberg on the outskirts of the Grünerløkka neighborhood, a ten-minute tram ride from Oslo's Central Station.
