Basic Accommodations at the University of Iceland Campus

No Car Needed

The Hotel Gardur is located in Reykjavík on the University of Iceland's Campus. It's within walking distance of the National Museum of Iceland; Reykjavík's City Hall; and Hallgrimskirkja, the largest church in Iceland, known for its amazing views of the city and its surrounding natural wonders. Reykjavík Harbor is a sixteen-minute walk from the hotel.

The bus station is nearby for inexpensive transportation to the airport, or guests can arrange pick-up and drop-off from the nearby airport for a surcharge. There is also a limited amount of self-parking for a fee.

Save Money in a Hostel-style Hotel

While the Hotel Gardur offers a lot of hotel amenities like housekeeping, tour/ticket assistance, complimentary high-speed Internet access, and dry-cleaning/laundry service, the property more closely resembles a hostel by American standards. Bathrooms are shared (although rooms do have sinks), and there is no extra space in the room for cots or roll-away beds. In addition to Wi-Fi, there's a common area shared computer for guest use.

The rooms are either private style with twin beds or hostel-like dorm accommodations.

The hotel serves a complimentary continental breakfast, but guests interested in dining out for lunch and dinner will need to look elsewhere. The hotel, however, does have a shared kitchen area where travelers can prepare their own meals to save money.

Explore the Natural Beauty of Reykjavík

For guests with a car or those joining a tour, leaving the city and taking in the beauty of the surrounding area is something to be remembered. A trip to the spectacular Gullfoss (Golden Waterfall) is on many travelers' lists. Visitors in the winter remark on the beauty of the frozen landscape, while summer tourists tell of the immense power of the falls.

Since Iceland is commonly referred to as the land of ice and fire, it seems only fitting to explore the Volcano House while there. This popular attraction is in the heart of Reykjavík and educates visitors on the volcanic history and geology of Iceland, which boasts some of the world's largest lava flows.

The Bottom Line

The Hotel Gardur provides basic rooms for budget-minded travelers who don't mind sharing a bathroom. In a costly city like Reykjavík, it's a welcome option. The facility is a dorm during the school year and a hotel in the summer months, so availability of accommodations is limited based on the time of year.

In summer, once the students have left, the university campus offers visitors utilitarian rooms with shared bathrooms. The cheapest sleeping-bag accommodation is in 16-person dorms....
