A Unique and Inexpensive Hotel With Vintage Charm

Stay in an Edwardian Beauty Located in James Bay

The James Bay Inn Hotel & Suites is an independent hotel in the James Bay neighborhood of Victoria. The hotel dates to 1911, but has worn the last century with grace. It's located close to the beach and is within walking distance of interesting destinations. Bicycles are available for guests to use free of charge, and are a fun way to see the sights. It has multiple room types that accommodate groups of all sizes, and has something for everyone.

Many Interesting Destinations Within Walking Distance

The area around the hotel is full of 100-year-old architecture, making a walk down the street more like a step back in time. For a bit of nature's beauty, head over to the nearby Beacon Hill Park, a 75 hectare park that goes all the way down to the shoreline. It's full of trails, has a petting zoo and wading pool. Head over to Victoria Harbor and watch the cruise ships arrive and leave, or walk around to view the surrounding buildings. Check out the Royal BC Museum which combines natural and human history.

Rooms to Suit Every Need

Rooms come in varying sizes, and a small cottage is available for private rentals. Options in the main hotel include Petite, Queen, Classic, King, Twin Queen, Family and Connecting. The Connecting room turns two rooms into one and has two bedrooms. The Suites are located in another building known as the 1908 Heritage house. Suites in the Heritage come in one bedroom and studio sizes. All rooms have flat-screen TVs with cable, desk, telephone, heat, air conditioning, and free wi-fi Internet. Suites and studios in the Heritage have two TVs and an electric fireplace.

The Bottom Line

The James Bay Inn embraces its heritage with antique furnishings used throughout the hotel and rooms. It has a picturesque location that's enhanced by the horse and carriage rides that go past. The hotel does have a limitation that may be an inconvenience to those who have to deal with physical handicaps. It's a multi-story building with no elevators, although staff is more than willing to help and bring luggage to the room. Overall, staff is friendly, courteous and attentive to the guests, and housekeeping is thorough. The pub and restaurant on the first floor is a definite bonus, and has excellent food on offer.

Rough Guide
Just two blocks south of the BC Parliament... One of Victoria’s more reasonably priced options, with 45 simply furnished rooms, and a restaurant and pub in the basement. No elevator.
The standard rooms in the main building of this four-story walk-up are small and simply furnished. The real bargains: the adjacent cottage and four suites located next door.
