There are two simple ways to run a flight search on our site.
1. Send an email to Hello Hipmunk!
Hello Hipmunk is our virtual travel assistant that provides one-way and round-trip flight results when you email firstname.lastname@example.org. If you’re already coordinating with friends, just add Hello Hipmunk to the email chain and ask your question. Make sure to use “@Hipmunk” so Hello Hipmunk knows you’re asking for help.
For example: “@Hipmunk, I need flights from SFO to Miami, Feb 13th – Feb 17th”
To learn more about Hello Hipmunk and how it works, visit www.hipmunk.com/hello
2. Use our online tools!
Access flight results from tons of airline sites and third party providers such as Expedia, Orbitz, Priceline, and more using our website. It’s the same tool our team uses to search and we always show you everything we find!
Visit www.hipmunk.com/flights and pick between the following options:
Roundtrip: Flights to and from a specific destination
One-Way: Flights to a specific destination without a return trip
Multi-City: Flights involving to more than one destination
Price Graph: Current pricing for a specific round-trip over the next 90 days
Once your trip type is selected, enter your travel cities, dates, the number of passengers, and your cabin preference. Then, click the orange “search” button.

Navigating through flight results/Booking a flight
At the top of your flight results page, you’ll see the time of day along with our Time Sliders, which allow you to filter flights to the exact times of the day you prefer to travel.
You can also filter your search by using the sort buttons: Agony, Price, Duration, Takeoff, and Landing. Additionally, you can select your preferred airlines and number of stops.
First, you will see your departure flight results. Each colored rectangle represents a separate flight. Gaps in between two rectangles indicate a stop. If you roll your cursor over each flight option, you will see more details on that particular option. To the left of each flight, you will see the price that is associated with that particular option. When you are ready to select an option, you can either click “Select Leg”, or simply click on the colored rectangle that represents the flight.
After selecting your departure flight, the results page will shift and give you the opportunity to filter and select a return trip. At any point in time, you can change your departure option by navigating toward the top of the page and clicking the “Change Departure” button. Once you have found both of the options that fit your needs, click the orange “Book” button on the return trip page, or simply click the rectangle that represents the flight.
After selecting both flights and hitting “Book”, you have the opportunity to review your selections in one list with full details for each flight on the Hipmunk itinerary page. On this page you will still have the option to go back and change your flights by clicking the “back to flight results”, located at the top of your page. If you want to save this itinerary, you can click the “Save Flight” button that features a heart. This will store this itinerary in your account so that you can visit later and book if there is still availability.
**Please note: Saving a flight does not reserve the ticket for you and does not guarantee the price will stay the same.
To the right of your flight details, you will see a list of airlines and providers offering tickets for this particular itinerary. Sometimes there are only a few or even one provider. Below the list you will see options to email this itinerary if you would like to share with friends, family, or colleagues, add it to your calendar, or receive a fare alert for this search.
Once you are ready to book the flight, simply click the orange “Book” button located to the right of the provider that you want to book with.
**Please note: Once you click “Book” you will be redirected to that particular provider’s website to complete the booking process. If you have any questions beyond this point regarding additional services, fees, or website issues, you will need to contact the provider directly.
Questions about a flight booking/Flight provider resources
As a metasearch site, Hipmunk is able to find flights sold by airlines and third party providers and put them in one place for you to compare. When you book a flight, you’re actually booking with the company selling the ticket, not Hipmunk. Because of this, you’ll have to reach out directly to whomever you booked with about any questions regarding a flight reservation you have already made.
Please note that airlines and booking providers have different policies regarding additional baggage fees, seat selection, ticket holding, cancellation, and other services. All inquiries regarding these additional services should be directed toward the airline or booking provider with whom you are planning your trip.
Additionally, Hipmunk does not provide confirmation for flight bookings. If you have booked a flight that you found using Hipmunk and have not received a confirmation, we recommend that you call the airline or booking provider directly to confirm the reservation has been made before attempting to book again.
If you don’t remember who you booked with, don’t worry! The easiest way to find out is to check the statement of the card you used to pay for the booking.

Hipmunk allows you to add up to three “flex” dates to your search. To do so, click and drag your mouse over the dates to which you wish to add flexibility. You can also use the plus and minus sign in the date field to search days before or after your arrival and departure times.
Additionally, you can check the flex date chart on any given flight search to check for any cheaper departure or arrival dates.
If you need help running a basic hotel search, try asking The Hipmunk! It’s our new artificial intelligence feature that helps you coordinate travel by simply sending an email to the address email@example.com. For example:

How do I book flights that I found using ITA Matrix?
If the flight itinerary that you found using ITA Matrix is still available, you should be find it using Hipmunk as well.
Start by running a basic round trip flight search. Visit www.hipmunk.com/flights and enter your travel cities, dates, and number of passengers. Then click the orange “search” button. For complex multi-city searches, make sure to select the “Multi-city” option above the search bar.
Once the results load, use the airline filter and time sliders to find flight options that match the carrier and time of the flight you are looking for. For details on how to use the filters, visit our article “Navigating through flight results/Booking a flight”
Once you narrow down the flight options, you can hover your mouse over each flight bar to see quick details of that option, including the departure/arrival airport, airline, departure/arrival times, flight number, cabin class and type of aircraft.
Once you find all of the individual flights that are listed in your ITA Matrix itinerary and select each leg using the steps above, a Hipmunk flight details page will appear with booking options from different airlines and/or 3rd party providers.
By clicking any of the “Book” buttons, you will be redirected to the airline or third party provider site, like to make the final reservation. After paying for your reservation, the company you book with will send you your emailed flight confirmation.
Where is my confirmation email?
Hipmunk does not provide confirmation emails for flights because we do not provide flight booking. Although you search flights through Hipmunk, you are always redirected to another site to book your flight with the airline or supplier. You’ll receive an email confirmation from them. If you do not receive a confirmation, we recommend that you call the provider directly.
Make sure your take note of the company you booked with in case you don’t receive your confirmation. Don’t remember who you booked with? Not to worry! Check your credit card statement to see who charged you.
How do I change or cancel my flight reservation?
Although you searched through Hipmunk, you booked your flight with the airline or supplier. You’ll need to contact the site you booked your ticket through to make any changes.
Not sure who you booked with? Don’t worry! Just check the statement of the card you used to make the payment. Once you have that information, feel free to let us know and we would be happy to help find the right way to contact the provider.
For help, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org, or just click the chat widget on the bottom right corner of your screen and send us a message.
What currency are these prices displayed in?
On the top right-hand corner of any page, you will see a button with a flag and a down arrow. The currency displayed throughout *most of the site will be associated with the country represented by the flag displayed.
If you click on the button, a drop-down menu will appear with a list of countries next to their corresponding flags. Selecting a different country will display prices in that particular country’s currency.
**All “Packages” are displayed in USD.
**CAD will always be displayed as C$.
Why is the flight I saw yesterday much more expensive today?
To provide some context, Hipmunk aggregates tons of flight fares from airlines and third-party providers, and puts them in one place for you to compare. We rely on these providers to, well, provide us with the most accurate information for the flights they’re offering. The airlines are also constantly changing flight fares so finding differences in prices can occur if the fare was recently adjusted.
How can I track the price of a flight I’m interested in?
You can track pricing of a particular trip by setting up a Fare Alert. First, run a flight search for the route and date you’re interested in booking. Once you’re on the results page, you’ll see an envelope in the top left corner. Click the envelope and then subscribe to receive alerts on the airfare.
Note: Fare Alerts are only supported in US Dollars.
Why is the price different than what is shown on the fare alert?
All flight fares are set by the airlines and can change frequently based on demand and a multitude of other factors. This makes Fare Alerts extremely time sensitive and the only way to lock in the price is to book a ticket. Please understand that Hipmunk is not able to dictate pricing as we do not sell the flights. We can only search for current pricing and availability.
To get this low fare again, we recommend keeping this alert. When you see an email, click the “See Fare” button right away to prevent a fluctuation in price between receiving and checking the flight fare.
How do I stop receiving fare alerts?
To manage Fare Alerts and other Hipmunk emails, simply log in to your Hipmunk account, click on the silhouette located in the top right hand corner of the page. Then, click the “Account Settings” tab and choose “Email and Alerts”. Here, you can easily manage and delete any alert you no longer want receive by clicking the boxes associated with each email or alert that is listed.
When is the best time to go?
There are a few different tools you can use to determine the best time to buy a plane ticket for a trip. The first is Hello Hipmunk. The Hipmunk searches thousands of itineraries for each request, providing great destination recommendations and suggestions for the most economical time to travel. Hello Hipmunk is available through email (email@example.com), Facebook Messenger, Slack, and Skype!
Next is the Price Graph. This feature displays the current prices for the next 90 days of a particular roundtrip search in a graph form. It allows you to look ahead and see if there are some cheaper times to take a specific trip. To access the price graph, visit https://www.hipmunk.com/flights and select the “Price Graph” option above the search field.
Say you find the perfect flight, but it isn’t the perfect fare. You can use our Fare Alert tool, or you can save a flight under a specific trip in your Hipmunk account.
How do I search for flights?
With Hipmunk’s interactive user interface, flight searching is not only simple but powerful. To search for flights, visit https://www.hipmunk.com/flights and enter your travel cities, dates, and number of passengers. Then click the orange “Search” button.
Can I search for trip options arriving and departing from different airports?
Absolutely! That’s what we call a Multi-City Search.
On the front page, you’ll see the option in addition to Roundtrip, One-Way, and Price Graph. Multi-City searching will create an itinerary of flights on different dates of up to six different legs, rather than searching for separate One-Way flights.
How do I read the results?
Think of it as a TV Guide or Gantt chart (for all you mathematicians!). Each row features a different flight, with the price displayed to the left. The airline is clearly denoted on each “flight bar” and the times are listed at the top. Any beige blocks you may see in your “flight bar” represent a layover.
Additionally, the little carrot on the top right of each flight option indicates which cabin class of each flight option:
None – coach
Orange – premium econonmy
Grey – business
Yellow – first
To see more details about a flight, just roll your cursor over any flight option.
How do I use the filter and sort buttons?
On the results page, you’ll see each flight appear on the page much like a TV Guide. Flights are represented as different colored bars based off of the airline operating the flight. At the top, you’ll see the time of day along with our Time Sliders, which allow you to filter out flights to the times of day you prefer to travel.
The filter defaults to Agony, but you can also sort specifically based on Price, Duration, Takeoff, and Landing. Additionally, you can select specific airlines, airports (when searching multiple airports) or number of stops so that your results are completely customized to meet your needs.
What is Agony, and why do I want to sort by it?
Agony is our unique and default sort option for flights. Price isn’t the only factor to consider when booking a flight, so “Agony” is a combination of price, flight duration, and the number of stops. Flights sorted by Agony show you the best options for both your wallet and schedule. And, of course, Hipmunk also provides the option to sort individually by price, duration, takeoff, landing with additional filters for Airlines, Airports and number of stops.
What is the bar that runs along the top of the search results?
The bar at the top of the screen is a timeline. You will notice two airplane icons that appear as though they are taking off and landing on either end. By clicking and dragging one of these icons, you can adjust your search results to show only the specific times you want to travel based on takeoff/landing time.
Do your airfares include taxes and fees?
Our airfares include all government-mandated taxes and fees. Some airlines may charge additional fees for things like bags, flight changes, and certain ways of checking in for your flight. Please check with the site you’re booking with to see which fees may apply.
Can Hipmunk search for Airbnb listings?
Can Hipmunk search for Amtrak or other ground transportation?
We do! Amtrak results are included in line with flight results when available. If Amtrak results are present for a particular search, you can click the “Airlines” filter button and select “Amtrak” to see only Amtrak results.
Amtrak stations that are separate from airports will also appear in the autocomplete form on a standard flight search when searching by city name.
How do I search for children, senior, or infant tickets?
Many airlines have different age classifications, and we provide different search options to help your travel planning process. When you are running a flight search, click on the passengers tab that defaults to “1 person, coach”:
You will see that a drop-down opens up, allowing you to add additional passengers in the following age groups:
Infant (under 2)
Lap Infant (under 2)
**Please note: Not all airlines offer discounted rates for different age groups. Searching for specific age groups does not guarantee that your ticket will be discounted in any way. Always make sure to check and confirm the passenger details on the booking page of the providers site, and if there are any issues with the information, contact the provider directly.
Can I hold a flight option and book at a later time?
There are some third-party services that provide options to temporarily reserve seats without paying upfront. If there are any available for the flight you are hoping to reserve, you can find them in the list of booking providers on the Hipmunk itinerary page of your trip.
Some airlines and third-party providers also offer flight holding options on their own sites. If you do not see an option on the Hipmunk itinerary page to hold a flight, you can click the “Book” button to get redirected to the provider in order to check. Providers that do not offer flight holding options may offer a 24-hour refund or hold policy upon completing a reservation. So, it’s always worth checking the fine print on the airlines’ or third-party providers’ site to find out if the 24-hour refund or hold policy is in effect.
What if my arrival and departure dates are flexible?
You can look up flights with flexible dates by using the calendar to click on a date and drag your cursor over your date range, up to three days. Also, you can manually use your + or – signs and entering the number of days (up to two) after each date in the corresponding date field of the search menu.
You can also use the flex date chart if you are already on the results page.
For even more flexibility, use our 90-day Price Graph. Visit our homepage, enter your cities, and choose the “Price Graph” option.
What is the price graph?
A Price Graph shows the current flight prices for a specific route for the next 90 days. At a quick glance, you can see which dates have the lowest roundtrip airfare.
To access the price graph, visit https://www.hipmunk.com/flights and select the “Price Graph” option above the search field.
How do I cancel or change my hotel reservation?
Please note that only hotels booked directly on the Hipmunk site will appear in our system. If you were redirected to a booking provider site to complete your booking, you will have to contact that company to find the reservation.
The best way to find out who you have booked with is to check your confirmation. If you cannot find a confirmation, you can also check the statement of the card you used to pay, and the transaction details should indicate the name of the vendor that charged you.
If you need any help finding the contact information for any particular provider, feel free to ask us for help! Just email us at firstname.lastname@example.org, or click the chat window on the bottom right hand corner of the page and send us a message.
What is “Ecstasy,” and why do I want to sort by it?
Ecstasy is our default hotel sorting option, which takes into consideration lowest price, highest rating, and best location.
How do I choose my seat?
Extra services like seat selections are offered directly through the company you use to book the ticket, not Hipmunk.
For more information, visit our article Questions about a flight booking/Flight provider resources.
How do I search for more than one airport?
There are two ways. Some big cities have their own “city code”. For example, NYC searches all New York City airports and QSF searches all San Francisco-area airports. Alternatively, you can list multiple airport codes with commas separating them. For example, LGA,EWR,JFK or SFO,OAK,SJC.
Why isn’t my flight showing up in “My Bookings?”
You won’t see your flights in the “My Bookings” section. This section is reserved for hotels that are booked directly on Hipmunk. Since you are redirected off of Hipmunk before completing a reservation, we do not have access to flight booking transactions or passenger information. However, you will find it in your email from whichever site you booked with. If you do not know who you booked with, just check the statement of the card you used to complete the transaction. The company that charged you is the one that will have your confirmation.
How are you different than other travel search sites?
We make it fast and easy to see flights that minimize “agony”—that is, we show you flights that have the lowest prices, the shortest durations, and the fewest layovers. We also display flights on a visual chart much like TV Guide. Seeing your flights in a chart helps determine how flights will affect your day.
As an added searching bonus, we include Amtrak train options along with flights! Get searching now by visiting https://www.hipmunk.com/flights
For hotels, we show you hotels that maximize “ecstasy”—that is, hotels that have the lowest prices, highest star rating, and best reviews. Our new hotel product allows you to use natural language to search for the specific amenities that fit your needs, determine the distance to a point of interest from any hotel option on the map, and flip cards for quick details. All of the features of our hotel product allow for users to easily compare options without having to open multiple tabs on their web browser.
As a bonus, our hotel search results includes vacation rentals in addition to traditional hotels. Now you can search hotels, apartment and house rentals all in one place!
Hello Hipmunk is another feature that separates us from other sites. Hello Hipmunk is our virtual travel assistant that can help you find flights and hotels without even having to visit our website. Visit https://www.hipmunk.com/hello for more info on how to get started. Hello Hipmunk can even integrate with Google Calendar to make it easy to find flights and hotels for upcoming trips.
Our mobile apps also offer special last-minute Tonight Deals, allowing you to save up to 60 percent on last minute hotels.
Hipmunk offers the most comprehensive set of flight and hotel options. We compare all the top travel sites so you don’t have to. Our goal is to provide you with the fastest, easiest way to plan travel.
