As a hospitality expert and TV host for the Travel Channel, travel is Anthony Melchiorri‘s job. The “Hotel Impossible” host (now entering its seventh season) traveled some 300,000 miles last year—a number that looks like it will increase in 2017: after the most successful season yet of the popular hotel transformation series, the Travel Channel is expanding Anthony’s role to include two new shows, “Hotel Impossible: Five Star Secrets” and “Hotel Impossible: Showdown.” We got Melchiorri to stay in one place long enough to give us his best travel advice, his favorite places to go, and the items he can’t leave home without.
Kelly Soderlund: So, tell us. What’s in your carry-on?
Anthony Melchiorri: Burt’s Bees hand cream; Bose headphones; cuticle oil (for close-ups); extra socks and a pair of CK underwear; iPad; mouthwash and dental floss; Kind Bars; index cards for ideas (it seems I’m most creative on planes); shoe polish; and lastly, an extra tie.
KS: Carry-on bag of choice?
KS: How often do you travel?
AM: Twelve days a month.
KS: First, business class or coach?
AM: First. I’m only 5’7″, but I sit like I’m 7’5″.
KS: Ok, now that we’re warmed up, let’s play a game of favorites. Favorite city to visit for work? Why?
AM: Vegas. It’s a hospitality town and I get to see all my friends, sit in world-class meeting rooms and eat the best food. Plus, I love poker. With all my travel I don’t get a lot of time the play poker.
KS: Favorite city for play? Why?
AM: Rome, because of the clothes and food. I can sit in a restaurant and watch the fashion all day! Oh, and the culture ain’t bad either!
KS: Favorite hotels?
KS: Favorite airline?
AM: Delta, I love their lounge and the soup!
AM: Berlin’s Brandenburg Airport
KS: Any travel tips before you take off?
AM: Don’t be that guy or girl. Yes, I will let you cut in front of me to make your plane. But it’s not my fault you’re late. I traveled 300,000 miles last year and never had to cut in front if someone. Also, just chill. If there are delays, there are probably good reasons for them. Like safety.
