With the holiday season officially upon us, it’s time to turn our minds to two things: travel and saving money. And if you can combine the two, it makes for an even happier holiday. Just don’t go looking for flight deals on Cyber Monday. Historical data tells us it just doesn’t happen.
The best day for consumers to find travel deals is Nov. 7, as we pointed out here. This applies in general (not just for flights bought for Xmas travel). Not only is it the most-booked day in November, it’s also the day where consumers can find their lowest price ($243 average price as compared to Cyber Monday’s $294).
While Cyber Monday received the second-most bookings in the month of November, there was no significant flight price reduction for US-originated flights.
To further illustrate, last year the equivalent date received 75 percent more bookings than the Nov. average, while Cyber Monday received 39 percent more bookings than the Nov average.
And to drive it all home, the average booking price was 16 percent lower than the average Nov. booking price, while Cyber Monday’s bookings were actually 1 percent higher than the average Nov. price.
While US travelers might be able to take strategical advantage of airline flight deal offerings, the better bet is to book on the 7th.
For Christmas flights, the week of Nov. 7 historically offers 14 percent lower prices. Here’s the November travel deals breakdown by city:
