As frequent travelers seek more ways to differentiate and customize their business, leisure, and bleisure trips, boutique hotels have become increasingly popular. Most offer a unique take or represent a certain character of the city in which they are located, providing a more experiential stay than most hotel chains.
Hipmunk names one US boutique property per month to its Hip Hotels list. Our winner this month? The Kimber Modern, located in the center of the eclectic yet sophisticated South Congress neighborhood of Austin, TX.
What makes a hotel hip? A combination of personality, price, and passion.
There are places you go, and then there are those indescribably alluring spots that draw you in at first glimpse. For the independent urban traveler seeking a unique escape during their visit to downtown Austin, the Kimber Modern holds particular appeal.
Perhaps it’s the clean lines of this architectural work of art tucked away within the hip and vibrant SoCo district. Maybe it’s the abundant light filtered through the canopy of oaks in the artfully landscaped courtyard. Or it could be the absolute comfort and attention to detail found in each thoughtfully designed and technologically sophisticated room in this breathtaking designer boutique hotel. Regardless of what leads you to Austin, find yourself at home at the Kimber Modern.
If there could be only one word to describe the process for creating the Kimber Modern, it would be discerning. There is not an element that has not been exhaustedly considered in a quest for perfectly balanced warmth and design.
Ideally located in the center of South Austin on South Congress Ave., yet managing to still be hidden away, the Kimber Modern is the perfect secluded escape for those seeking a South Congress / Austin downtown hotel, noteworthy restaurants, live music and one-of-a-kind shopping. There really is no better place in Austin to begin your work or pleasure adventures.
Walking up the stairs and into the hotel gives one the sense of entering a modern treehouse for grownups. Tucked under a canopy of old Texas Live Oaks our intimate courtyard is covered in a multi-level deck full of comfortable seating in private, conversation-friendly groups. One of the favorite spots of the hotel, especially with its 25-foot glass water feature, the courtyard offers guests a secluded haven where serenity reigns and the stress of the day will melt away.
The common area is the hub of the hotel–open and inviting with sliding glass floor-to-ceiling doors that create a seamless transition to the outdoors. Filled with beautifully designed furniture, you can sink into one of four enveloping Arne Jacobson egg chairs nestled around an Eames surfboard coffee table. The walls of the common room are hung with artist Margo Sawyer’s brilliant metal boxes and a thought provoking Gretchen Gammell painting while a modern rug warms the floor.
This is also where you’ll find our virtual concierge: the computer and printer.
In the kitchen area, help yourself to our European-style self-serve coffee system, a water bar offering still and sparkling waters and Italian sodas, and local organic breakfast items to get your morning going: bagels, pastries, hard-boiled eggs, juice, fresh fruit, yogurt, and granola.
The Kimber Modern offers guest rooms that are minimal and modern, yet warm and inviting. All of the rooms come equipped with flat screen TV’s with cable, iPod docking station with radio and alarm clock, and complimentary WiFi available throughout the property. Additionally, all bathrooms provide Malin and Goetz bath products.
A custom maple platform bed and desk seamlessly integrate with the entire hotel, not just the room. Sophisticated touches like Sferra fine Italian linens, down and down-alternative duvet covers and pillows, lush Kimber Modern robes, courtyard facing floor-to-ceiling windows, and Kimber’s distinctive frosted-glass bathroom are contrasted with the sleekness of our molded maple reading chair that fits snugly into a light-filled nook. Keyless entry eliminates the stress of checking in and necessity of carrying around a key. Take pleasure in the details wherever you look.
Enter into a light filled, comfortable seating area with our custom built maple sectional, a round Zero table with Eames molded plastic chairs, wet bar and an under counter refrigerator for your convenience. The bedroom is separated from the living space with a custom maple platform bed, Sferra fine linens, natural latex rubber king mattress, and lush Kimber Modern robes. The distinctive frosted glass bathroom with a walk-in shower and Happy D Duravit soaking tub entices guests to treat themselves to a relaxing soak after a long day exploring.
In a class of its own, the White Suite is sheer luxury, located at the apex of the hotel providing maximum privacy. Featuring a custom maple king bed, which can be separated into two twins, a stylish couch, a glass desk that seems to melt into the tiled wall, a large frosted glass bathroom which boasts a six-foot Kaldewei soaking tub, large walk-in shower and a complimentary fully stocked mini bar, sets the new standard for the hospitality industry. A large, fully-private deck exclusively for guests of the White Suite is canopied by a hundred-year-old Live Oak. It is the perfect environment for peacefully lounging with a glass of wine after a busy day exploring Austin.
Eat + Drink
The Kimber Modern offers a complimentary organic locally-sourced self-serve continental breakfast, along with its beverage bar, which includes a European-style super- automatic Jura coffee system allowing guests to enjoy a variety of specialty coffee drinks at the push of a button. In addition, they offer chilled still and sparkling water from their water bar, as well as complimentary beer, wine, soda, and snacks 24 hours a day in the common room. They also have a partnership with a five-star concierge service that delivers personalized and local “foodie” experiences for their guests. Whether it’s a customized Taste of Austin tour, or having the famed Franklins BBQ delivered to the hotel, they can orchestrate on guest’s behalf.
Kimber provides yoga mats for guests who would like to enjoy exercising on our multi-level courtyard shaded by a 300-year-old Live Oak. There are miles of hike and bike trails around Lady Bird Lake, just minutes away from the hotel.
