As part of Hipmunk’s ongoing mission to reduce travel planning agony, we’re delighted to announce the inclusion of “Basic Coach” fares to our flight search tool. When a basic coach fare is included in a flight search result, Hipmunk users will also see call-outs detailing the trade-offs for booking that low-cost flight.
But we didn’t stop there. We also added call-outs for “No Frills Fight” that show travelers what they should consider before booking the flight. These new additions to the Hipmunk flight search tool make sure travelers know exactly what to expect from each flight before they reach the checkout.
“We know that travelers expect to see the lowest fares on Hipmunk, but it can be frustrating to get nickeled-and-dimed at the gate or be surprised by what’s not included with a flight,” says Hipmunk’s director of product, Steve Vargas.
What’s a Low-cost Airline, Anyway?
A low-cost carrier or low-cost airline (also known as a no-frills, discount, or budget carrier or airline) is an airline that offers generally low fares in exchange for eliminating many traditional passenger services.
What About Basic Coach?
Thanks in large part to the popularity of these low-cost airlines, a few major US carriers recently announced their own version of these basic fares—now widely known as “basic economy” or “basic coach”.
These reduced fares are fantastic, as they increase the available options for every type of traveler. The problem? Before now, these low fares can be hard to find. Even worse, it can be confusing to know how these new fares compare to standard economy fares that travelers have traditionally booked.
The display of basic coach and no frills fare and their respective add-on fees is the latest step towards presenting customers with a holistic view of their options so that they can choose the least agonizing flight.
“Travelers don’t typically think of their flight experience in terms of fare classes,” says Vargas. “They just want to know whether they can bring in their roller bag and whether the price they see comes with strings attached. By making it easy to see your restrictions, from the budget airlines to the traditional carriers’ discounted fares, we make it easy for users to find a great price without the fear that they’re missing something.”
