This is a Hipmunk post from Jodi Ettenberg of Legal Nomads
Every year a group of travel bloggers gets together, combining their resources and readers to raise money for a charity of choice. In 2008, Passports with Purpose (as the group is called) was founded as a way to give back to the places we visit and has been increasingly successful with each given year.
In 2009, the group built a school in rural Cambodia, and last year the group raised funds to build an entire village in Tamil Nadu, India with local NGO LAFTI, surpassing their goal of $50,000.
The way the fundraiser works is that individual bloggers procure prizes as incentives for donation, and there are random draws for the prize of choice at the end of the fundraising drive. I’m offering an 8-day G Adventures trip to Jasper/Banff, Pam from Nerd’s Eye View is offering a $1000 voucher for HomeAway.com, Deborah from Delicious Baby is offering a four night stay in 1-bedroom ocean view suite at Honua Kai Resort & Spa, Maui – you get the idea.
This year’s charity of choice is Room to Read, and the aim is to build libraries in Zambia. A total of $80,000 is the goal, which will go toward construction of the libraries themselves, the resources (books, educational materials and teacher training) and 3 years of support following completion. After those 3 years, the libraries will be handed over to the Zambian government and the local school system.
The fundraiser ends December 16, 2011. The donation page is here, along with a very long list of great prizes.
