The summer holiday is (finally) here, and if you’re like us, the warmer weather has you daydreaming about laying on the beach, sipping a tropical drink while the waves lap at your feet.
Mexico historically has been the go-to destination for Americans looking to make this dream a reality: it’s the most popular international country for both flights and hotels on Hipmunk not only during the summer, but year-round. And despite the fact that tourism to the US from Mexico has taken a hit in 2017, Americans’ interest in traveling to Mexico remains strong. Indeed, flight bookings to Mexico this summer are up 15 percent over last*, while average round trip summer airfare is down 8 percent**, perhaps driven by a weak peso.
Wondering how best to take advantage of this travel trend without spending too many pesos? Hipmunk analyzed its historical flight and hotel booking data and found 30 opportunities to take a trip to 12 of Mexico’s most popular cities this summer for less than $1,000 per person (roundtrip airfare plus a 3-night hotel stay).
Even better, we created this cheat sheet that breaks down pricing month-by-month. Can’t make it this summer? No worries, we even broke down the average prices of Mexico’s 15 most popular airport destinations and 20 most popular hotel cities each month for the entire year.
Now, the only work that will go into planning your Mexico summer vacay is deciding the marg flavor you’ll be sipping on while you sunbathe on the sand.
Other tips to maximize your Mexico summer savings:
- Look for all-inclusive resorts to save on food costs
- Buddy-up on rooms
- Wait to go until later in the summer season or early fall (just keep your eye on the hurricane forecast)
- Check out Airbnbs
- Stay inland or go to more remote locales, rather than in touristy party cities
