With Spring Break quickly approaching, we compiled our top tips for budget-conscious Spring Breakers (and procrastinators) on how to get the most out of their trip while spending the least on airfare and lodging.

After looking at historical flight data, as well as roundtrip airfare between five major U.S. airports and some of the most-popular Spring Break destinations, we advise:

Book by Presidents’ Day for the Best Deals

Prospective Spring Breakers who book flights after Presidents’ Day (February 17) could end up paying up to 12 percent more on airfare—an average of $50 more—if they book in the last two weeks of February. Those who wait until early March to book could pay an average of 53 percent more—which could mean up to $215 less spending money for the big trip.

“Spring Break is a peak travel time, which means higher-than-typical airfare” said Adam Goldstein, Hipmunk CEO. “But the sooner you book, the more you can save, and the more money you’ll have for spending on your trip.”

Need a Round-Trip Ticket for Under $500? No Problem

For Spring Breakers undecided on where to go, but keen to fly without breaking the bank, we looked at roundtrip airfare prices out of five major U.S. airports for the week of March 16-23, 2014 and  found five popular U.S. destinations with roundtrip airfare for under $500—Las Vegas, San Diego, New York City, Miami, and Puerto Rico.
